Tied for the best record in baseball at the ceremonial halfway point of the season, the Cubs are in great shape to make a run at getting the 100-year-old monkey off their backs.

After acquiring Rich Harden just before the break, Chicago has an incredibly powerful rotation led by the one-two punch of Carlos Zambrano and Harden, which is arguably the best in the majors.

But the Cubs are not just about pitching, their offense is ranked first in the National League. With Alfonso Soriano expected back from his broken hand next week, the lineup will get that much more dangerous.

But with 10 games remaining against the Brewers, and nine against St. Louis, the road will not be easy.

Player to Watch: Sean Marshall—A surprising pick for some, but Marshall could be a huge piece for the Cubs as they head down the stretch. As the Cubs' sixth starter/long reliever, Marshall already showed his worth, pitching two scoreless relief innings against the Giants on Saturday.

Sure, the Cubs have other pitchers that can pitch scoreless innings of relief, they do not have another pitcher who can step in should in the injury prone Harden fall victim to the injury bug once again.

Marshall will be someone to watch in the second half.

Due to a bullpen meltdown by the Chicago Cubs, Sean Marshall was called on in relief of Rich Harden.  Pitching for the first time since July 6, Marshall was called on to pitch the 10th and 11th inning. 

He faced six batters, outmatched all of them, needing only 20 pitches and recording two strikeouts.  Marshall has all the looks of making a seamless transition back to the bullpen; speculation has already begun as to how this may affect the rotation. 

Some suggest this opens Chicago's GM to trade away veteran Jason Marquis, while others view Marshall's success boding well, simply showcasing tradeworthy talent.

We'll see how this unfolds in the next three to four starts.

"It's been a good week for me," Marshall said. "I had a good win on Sunday (in St. Louis) to get my week going right and hopefully we can keep this momentum going the rest of the year."

After Sean Marshall pitched five shutout innings, Mike Burns, Neal Cotts and J.R. Mathes combined to allow seven hits and seven runs in just the seventh and eighth innings alone.

Eric Patterson, who went 3-for-5, scored the I-Cubs' run on a wild pitch to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.

The Express have now beaten the Cubs six out of seven times.

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs announced on Friday that LHP Sean Marshall has been optioned back to the Iowa Cubs when LHP Scott Eyre was activated from the disabled list. Marshall has 72 hours to report to Des Moines. He will be activated on Monday and is expected to be the starting pitcher when the I-Cubs host the Portland Beavers at 6:35 at Principal Park.
Marshall started the season with the I-Cubs and started the team's first game against Round Rock on April 4th. He pitched three perfect innings and stuck out six before getting called up to Chicago on April 9th. Marshall earned a save in his first appearance at Pittsburgh and had no record and a 4.15 ERA in 13 appearances overall. In 8.2 innings, he allowed eight hits and four runs while walking seven and striking out five.

That leaves Jason Marquis and Jon Lieber competing, with Marshall likely headed to the bullpen. "Unless something drastic happens, it's going to be hard for him to crack our rotation," Piniella said. "But there's a possibility still that he could pitch out of our bullpen." Marshall, whose name has surfaced in trade rumors, added: "I know that the numbers are what they are and it's tough in my circumstance. Hopefully, I've been pitching well enough that if they need me in the bullpen or need me to fill in the starting rotation, I'll be there for them."

A little over a week ago, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Ryan Dempster was ahead of the field for the third slot in the starting rotation.

But since then, Jason Marquis ticked Piniella off by suggesting he'd rather be traded than go to the bullpen, then followed that up with a sharp three innings Thursday; Jon Lieber breezed through four scoreless innings Saturday, and Sean Marshall looked so good in his scheduled three innings Saturday against Oakland that he was sent out for a fourth before running into trouble.

''That's what competition for spots does,'' said Piniella, who wouldn't evaluate where the four candidates for two rotation spots stand with exactly two weeks to go before he says he'll make a decision.

''I don't know where anything is,'' he said. ''You can draw your own conclusions.''

Between Marshall and Marquis, one or both could be traded by then. If everybody left stays healthy and continues to pitch well, Lieber's in and Dempster could have the edge on the other spot.

''Look, what I anticipate here is that one of our starters will have to pitch out of the bullpen,'' Piniella said.

Regardless of who that is, he added, there's no scenario in which all four could be carried on the roster.

From the Chicago Tribune 3.10.08 - Sean Marshall: The lone left-hander in the group is on the outside looking in despite stabilizing the rotation as the fifth starter after being recalled from the minors last April. He needs an injury to have a strong chance to win a job in the Cubs' rotation and is more likely to be traded.

From ChicagoSports.com 3.10.08 - Sean Marshall threw three shutout innings in Saturday's other game, a 7-6 loss to Oakland, before giving up two runs in the fourth. He appears to be the victim of a numbers game, but he could make it as a reliever.

"What I anticipate here is that one of our starters will have to pitch out of the bullpen," Piniella said.

Lieber has not been a reliever since 1996, other than a couple of appearances last year. Marquis hasn't pitched in relief regularly since 2001. Piniella expects to have his rotation set about March 23, at which point every starter will have had two more starts to prove himself.

"We're going to go with our best starting pitching, and that's it," Piniella said. "I don't know how else to do it."

No, we haven't been asleep.  The only articles or hype and it all seemed endless had to do with the Cubs rotation.  It seems everyone had an opinion and they were all variations on the same theme.  I opted out of tracking all of them. 

With Sean scheduled to start, so coverage will begin for the 08 season.

The other openings are in the rotation. Carlos Zambrano, Ted Lilly, and Rich Hill are set. The competition for the other spots begins Thursday. The contenders? Jon Lieber, Ryan Dempster, Jason Marquis and Sean Marshall. Dempster will get things started on Thursday in the Cactus League opener.

"We've got the people here in camp," Piniella said. "It's not like we have to look for anyone else."

What happens to the starter who doesn't get a spot?

"I don't think any of these guys want to go to the bullpen who don't start," Piniella said. "Let's have them compete, and we can start exploring that a little later on this spring. I would think the guys we have here all want to start."

Converted closer Ryan Dempster is the early front-runner to grab the No. 3 spot behind Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly, while Rich Hill has already sealed the No. 4 spot. The main battle is expected to be between Jon Lieber and Jason Marquis for the fifth spot, with Sean Marshall as the dark-horse candidate.
