10.08.07 - Next year not here

"Mr. Cub Ernie Banks, wearing a shirt identifying him as Mr. Cub, throws out the first pitch. The greatest Cub never to reach a World Series, Banks tosses a pitch caught by Sean Marshall, a lanky, lefty wisp of pitching promise who qualifies as the greatest Cub left off this year's playoff roster.

10.03.07 - Notes: Hart makes NLDS roster
(Marshall, Trachsel, Ohman passed over in first round)
Marshall will pitch for the Cubs in Mesa, Ariz., at their instructional league to get stretched out if the team advances to the next round of the playoffs, Hendry said.

09.29.07 - Sean saw action today in relief of Rich Hill. He threw two innings giving up one walk and striking out three. Hill, Marshall and Eyre combined on a one hit shut out of the Reds.

Hill doesn't allow a hit until sixth in win

09.29.07 - Closing Time
While it's too late for the question to inspire any kind of change or insight, why would Lou Piniella elect Trachsel for the job of closing out the series, when Sean Marshall is busy gathering dust on the shelf of the Cubs clubhouse? It's true, he doesn't have the experience that Trachsel does (and Trachsel's numbers against the Marlins are historically good), but I'd hope it would have been obvious that Trachsel is but a shadow of the All-Star caliber pitcher he once was. Marshall spent this season earning his stripes and developing into a fine young pitcher, possibly one who will collaborate with Rich Hill and Carlos Zambrano to form the rotation of the future for the Cubs (all three are products of the Cubs farm system).

09.26.07 - Counting Chickens in Cubdom

09.16.07 - Sean picked up his 8th loss of the season.

"I felt really good," Marshall said. "That's one of the best days I felt all year. I felt strong, I felt fresh. I left some balls over the plate when I needed to get them down."

"Actually, I felt really good," Marshall said. "It's one of the best days I felt all year. I felt strong. I felt refreshed. Maybe I felt a little too refreshed."

Kendall blamed himself.

"The bottom line is I didn't make that throw," Kendall said. "It changed the momentum, and they won. I had to step over the bat. Whatever. The bottom line is I should have taken my time and made the throw. I didn't, and the momentum changed."

Good day, bad night

Cubs' magic wears off

Splitting headache

Cubs settle for split of doubleheader

09.12.07 - From the Chicago Daily Herald "The Marshall plan: Lou Piniella said lefty Sean Marshall will start the night portion of Saturday's day-night doubleheader in St. Louis, with fellow lefty Ted Lilly going in the afternoon game.

Marshall does not figure to get into a game before then. He last started on Aug. 3, going 3¿ innings. Marshall next worked in Sunday's 10-5 loss at Pittsburgh, going 1½ innings of relief.

"I'll throw a bullpen to get back on track," Marshall said, pointing to today. "So we'll be ready to go. I feel good. I felt good in Pittsburgh even though it was tough conditions in the rain. I feel strong. My arm's been strong. I'm ready to go."

09.10.07 - The site will experience a short amount of downtime on Sept 11. Please try back after about 30 minutes if it is not up when you look.

" Sean Marshall may not have much experience throwing this deep into the season, but Trachsel was almost single-handedly responsible for the Cubs' loss to the Pirates yesterday. The Cubs tried to fix something that wasn't broken. The best they can do now is try to put it back to the way that it was." by Pat Lackey

09.10.07 - "Cubs RHP Sean Marshall, who has started 18 times this season, pitched in relief for the first time in his career, majors or minors. ... Trachsel is 1-6 since June 13. He may have pitched his way out of the rotation only 10 days after being traded by Baltimore, with Marshall likely to resume starting. ..." The Canadian Press

09.09.07 - Sean got into the game today as a reliever pitching the 5th inning into the sixth facing 6 batters. I can't sum it up much better than this quote:

"Sean who? -- Marshall last made a start Aug. 31, getting demoted to the bullpen when the Cubs traded for Trachsel. But going into Saturday night's game, Marshall hadn't been used. Piniella preferred to use him as a long reliever, but no opportunity has arisen. The left-hander might have to get into a game for a short stint. Otherwise, there's a risk he'd go 14 days without work. "We need to get him an inning or two," Piniella said."

Kind of ironic that the guy the Cubs traded for and ultimately gave Sean's rotation spot to, has come up empty twice with the latest outing dropping the Cubs out of first place. Also coincidental is the fact that Sean's first relief appearance was in one of Trachsel's starts. I haven't been able to find any article with Sean mentioned in them.

09.07.07 - Sean Marshall's next start will be in the Sept. 15 doubleheader in St. Louis, when he will team with Lilly. In the meantime, he's in the bullpen.

"Giving Marshall a little bit of a breather will be good for him," Piniella said.

09.02.07 - Notes: Marshall headed to 'pen

09.01.07 - Cubs get Trachsel, then lose to Astros

"It's up to management and the skipper what he wants to do next," said Marshall, who has only 3 wins in his last 11 starts. "I'm just going to try to keep pitching well enough to stay in there."

Marshall (7-7) said he was a "little bit" surprised to hear the team went out and traded for another starter.

"We'll see," Marshall said. "We got a nice veteran pitcher on our staff, and he's played a lot of years. I don't know what they plan on doing, but we'll find out soon enough."

08.31.07 - By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

aComing off a series in which they held off the Brewers to hold on to first, the Cubs couldn't get anything going in the opener with Houston. Sean Marshall toiled through 3 2/3 innings, and Aramis Ramirez had three of the Cubs' seven hits, but made a key error.

08.08.07 - "Cubs squander chances and game."  Sean picked up hissecond loss in as many starts, going 5 1/3 innings at Minute Maid Park.

"The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs in the first, but managed just one run on a bases-loaded walk to Cliff Floyd, and Matt Murton's late homer plated the only other tally as the Cubs lost their third straight. Sean Marshall was charged with five runs, allowing seven hits, in defeat." Carrie Muskat

"I thought he threw well," Piniella said. "We're not giving the pitchers any runs to work with. He pitched a game good enough to win."

I actually thought the Chicago bats might bail Sean out.  He has pitched a few games this year with no run support.  On a day when he could really use it to avoid the "L", but they fell short.

07.22.07 - Brian pitched well last night but picked up the loss. After listening to the game, I can't summarize it any better than the way the Chillicothe Gazzette did:

"Overall, Marshall (2-3) pitched well, allowing four runs - only two of them earned - on three hits in four innings. But the lefty had to be removed from the game early due to injury.   "We knew there was something (wrong) right from the beginning," Dunn said of Marshall. "He didn't have the same velocity as he has had. Come to find out, it was a strain, maybe an oblique muscle."

Paints lose fifth straight in Slippery Rock

07.21.07 - Brian should be up tonight against Slippery Rock, game time 7:05 et.  It is not on the televised list for Chillicothe.  I understand many people have had trouble getting the Frontier League video casts.  I also learned it is not unique to us.

Sean should be getting the call tomorrow against Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley.  Game time is set for 2:20 et.

07.09.07 - Brian picked up his first win of the year with his best pitching performance so far.  He went deep into the game, 6 1/3 innings not allowing a run.  He had his best walk to strikeout ratio too.

"By the third or fourth inning I was in that rhythm," Marshall told WXIZ radio's postgame show. "I've got something to build on going into the All-Star break."

07.04.07 - Some pictures taken by my son Matt and I at the Nats/Cubs game today are now available for your viewing pleasure.Sean 7.4.07  There are two sets of the same pictures.  One set (click here) have been sized for web viewing.  For looking online, I'd suggest this set.  There is a second set (click here) that are the pictures in their original form from the camera, posted so you could print or photoshop them as you please.  These can also be found on the Picture Link to the left under Sean's name.

Today's was Matt's 20th birthday.  The invitation to the game, as well as the hospitality provided by all the Marshall's made this one of the best birthday's he's ever had.  Having been born on July the 4th has made the past 19 birthday's difficult to celebrate on the exact day because many people are at other celebrations.  This trip, the game, the ball are all very very very much appreciated.  Thank you Sean, Carol, Nelson and the rest of the Marshall's.

Florence sweeps doubleheader from Paints

The 'can't miss' kids

From Fox Sports Network:

Brewers at Cubs

Probable starters: Ben Sheets (9-3, 3.09 ERA) vs. Sean Marshall (4-2, 2.44 ERA)

What to watch: The Brewers and Cubs are heated division rivals, and they're also the two hottest teams in the NL at this moment. Milwaukee still holds a fairly comfortable lead in the Central, and over at Baseball Prospectus, they give the Brewers an 84.2 percent chance of making the postseason. Should they make it, they would end the longest ongoing playoff drought in all of major professional sports.

The Cubs, meanwhile, still have a lot of ground to make up in the Central and in the NL Wild Card chase, but they've been playing much better of late. For the month of June, the Cubs are 16-10, and if you project their record based on run differential, they ought to be seven games over .500 at this writing. For the most part, the Cubs have under-performed their run differential because they're 9-15 in one-run games.

Nonetheless, the Cubs will have their work cut out for them on Saturday. That's because Brewers ace Ben Sheets comes in on a roll: he's reeled off 10 quality starts in his last 11 outings. And his 3.04 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks 10th among NL qualifiers. The Cubs get to Sheets more than most (he's got a 3.94 ERA in 20 career starts against the North Siders), but he's pitching like a house afire right now.

Opposing Sheets will be Sean Marshall, who's pitched quite well this season; however, the Brewers have ripped lefties in 2007. On the other hand, there's the fact that Milwaukee can't seem to win away from Miller Park. Either way, the surging Cubs badly need to pick up a W against the first-place Brewers.

Marshall dominant as Cubs sweep Sox

06/24/07 - Brian started last night for the first time since High School (according to the Paints announcers).  He did pick up the loss in a 3-1 game.  Although he walked 8 and hit two, seemingly struggling a little bit with control, he went 6 innings only allowing runs in the first inning.  If the Paints keep him on a 5 day rotation, he would be up again on the 29th when the Paints visit the Florence (Kentucky) Freedom.

ThunderBolts Use Big First to Mix Paints

From the Fox Sports wire : The Cubs have found a young pitching star in Sean Marshall, who tuned in his fifth consecutive strong start, and third straight win, against the Mariners this weekend. Marshall allowed two runs in eight innings while scattering seven hits. It was his first win of the year when he didn't receive ridiculous run support, so he demonstrated that he could win a close one without the big strikeout pitch (one strikeout). Marshall induced 16 groundballs during the game. He's allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his five starts.

06/21/07 - Brian pitched last night, one inning facing the minimum.  Box score has been added.

Brian is being converted into a starter. He is scheduled to pitch on Saturday in Chicago against the Windy City Thunderbolts. It is a night game.

06/20/07 - Sean had a "no decision" against the Ranger's last night on a short outing, but he did strike Sammy Sosa out twice.

06/09/07 - Sorry for the delay in updating the site. It's been a busy week or so in the Murphy household with family in from out of town for my daughters graduation and the Cosby Titans (for whom I volunteer - high school baseball) went to the regional semi-finals in the state of Virginia. I believe I have now caught up, so please check out the picture & article links for both Marshalls.

If you see issues or formatting problems, please drop me a note. I have switched accounts (the web server this runs on) as well as the software I use to maintain it.

Now, onto the baseball - - Brian had a 5 inning outing last night. Although his team lost, it was Brian's best performance to date. Listening to his games on the internet remind me of listening to sports growing up, before there was cable or ESPN. To listen to his games, simply click on the "Listen to the Game" link on the menu on the left of the Paints website.

Sean also saw action, picking up his second win of the season with an excellent performance on the mound. I got to watch most of the game and Sean looked smooth and comfortable. Anything coincidental - last two outing for both have come on the same day. Check the box scores, articles for storys on both.

06/03/07 - Both Sean and Brian were on the mound yesterday. I was able to watch the Cubs game. Sean pitched very well and it was good to see the Cubs give him some run support for a change. Brian also saw action pitching better than his previous outings. See the picture link for Sean for some new items. Both Brian and Sean have new box scores and articles. I couldn't find any writeups that mentioned Brian, but you can read the game summary here.

Paints roughed up again in Florence

Brian saw his first action of the year last night when the Chillicothe Paints faced off against the Florence Freedom.  I have not bee able to find any write ups at this point.  They appear to run a day or two behind in their local papers.
Brian came into the game in the 9th, the Paints already down by 5.  Brian gave up two.  I'm sure he was not happy with his outing, but for the first time in a while, I think he pitched OK.  You can check out the box score by clicking on the link below his name on the left.

05/24/07 - Chillicothe's season opened last night with the team falling to the Florence Freedom, but Brian did not see any action.

LHP Sean Marshall and RHPs Carlos Marmol and Roberto Novoa, a trio that gave the Cubs nearly 280 innings last season, all begin in the minors. OF Angel Pagan got into 77 games last year, but a repeat is unlikely given the Cubs imported three veteran outfielders last winter in Alfonso Soriano, Cliff Floyd and Daryle Ward. Top prospect OF Felix Pie begins in Triple-A.

Cubs' Novoa nursing tight shoulder
Roberto Novoa has yet to make his spring debut because of tightness in his shoulder.
Even the less notable Cubs pitchers are ailing this spring. Sean Marshall and Michael Wuertz are also down with what the team describes as minor shoulder ailments. Given the Cubs' history, it'd be a surprise if one of them isn't scheduled for surgery within the next couple of months. Mar. 4 - 8:40 pm et

LHP Sean Marshall suffered some shoulder pain toward the end of the 2006 season and received treatment during the offseason. He was a week behind in throwing during the start of camp but was confident he would catch up to the others by the time the games started. Marshall is one of four pitchers under serious consideration for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Reasons for Optimism

02/19/07 -  Sean Marshall, who is coming back from a rotator-cuff problem, played catch Sunday and threw lightly off the mound.
"My arm speed is like it was two years ago," Marshall said. "I was a little slower last year. My throws were crisp [Sunday], flat ground felt good, and my stride was back in line. My throwing has been going really well." Marshall could have his first real mound session on Monday or Tuesday.
