Date Posted: 5/27/2004

The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx broke open a close game by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 15-6 in the first game of a four game series Thursday night at Pringles Park.

With the score 8-6 entering the home half of the eighth inning, the Diamond Jaxx sent thirteen men to the plate against reliever Todd Moser. Micah Hoffpauir had the big blow, a bases loaded double that scored three runs, giving the Diamond Jaxx a 13-6 lead. Hoffpauir also hit a two run homer as the Diamond Jaxx first baseman ended the night with a season high five runs batted in.

At one point in the game, Carolina had a 3-0 lead before the Diamond Jaxx scored five runs in the fourth inning off starter and loser Nic Ungs (3-2). Hoffpauir's two run homer sparked the five run inning. The Diamond Jaxx continued to play long ball in the fifth inning when Richard Lewis led off the inning with a solo home run. Later in the inning Geovany Soto belted a two run shot.

Diamond Jaxx starting pitcher Sean Marshall (1-1) was the benefactor of the offensive explosion as the left-hander picked up his first win in Double-A ball. Marshall pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Game two of the four game series takes place at 6:35 p.m. on Friday night at Pringles Park. Bobby Brownlie (5-3 2.82) goes for the Diamond Jaxx. Carolina will counter with lefty Bill Murphy (5-1 2.86).
